This
painting by David Robert, R.A., circa 1830 of the first pylon of Ramesses II and
the beautiful obelisk gives us a fine view of what the Luxor Temple must have
looked like for the last thousand years.
Just
beyond the left pylon, you can see a white dome, which is part of an 8th Century
mosque that was constructed on top of and part of the west wall and pillars of
the peristyle court of Ramesses II. The Egyptian homes that can be seen here in
front of the right pylon are no longer there as you have seen in this gallery.
Many parts of the Luxor and Karnak complex as well as untold ancient treasures
are still resting beneath modern Luxor.
